History

Hummingbird Nest ranch is a world class equestrian facility located in Santa Susana, California. The 140 acre property is surrounded by thousands of acres of land, which is part of the Simi Valley Park District.

The area known as Simi Valley was originally inhabited by the Chumash Indians. It is believed that the name of the Chumash Indian Village, “Shimiji,” is the origin of the word “Simi,” and the area known as Hummingbird Nest Ranch contains a number of sites which were once occupied by the Chumash Indians.

In 1795 Santiago Pico received the land grant known as El Rancho Simi. Eventually the 113,000 acre grant came into the hands of Jose de la Guerra Y Noriega of Santa Barbara, and they held onto it until 1865 when American interests took over.

Charles Emerson Hoar of Massachusetts acquired the area, and named it Hummingbird’s Nest as a tribute to his lost love. After his death in 1912, it is unclear who took over the property. However, in the late 1920’s a Los Angeles businessman named Mayer purchased the land and built the old brick home which still stands today.

The ranch today has been completely restored. The Spanish colonial style is kept as a theme throughout the property. The historic Spanish architecture was carefully researched and new buildings have been constructed following strict architectural guidelines of that period. The property has a truly unique atmosphere, breathtaking mountain views and beautiful landscaping. Whether you are planning a garden wedding or reception, a corporate event, or looking for a film location, Hummingbird Nest offers an unparalleled experience.
