Hummingbird Nest Ranch

HISTORY

The area known as Simi Valley was originally inhabited by the Chumash Indians. It is believed that the name of the Chumash Indian Village, “Shimiji”, is the origin of the word “Simi”. Hummingbird Nest Ranch contains a number of sites which were once occupied by the Chumash Indians.

During the Spanish period Simi Valley was known as El Rancho Simi. The Spanish colonial style is today kept as
a theme throughout the property. The historic Spanish architecture was carefully researched and new buildings have been constructed following strict architectural guidelines of that period.

In the 1860’s American interests took over and in the
late 1920’s the land was purchased by a Los Angeles business man named Mayer. He built a brick home
“Sitting Bull” which still stands today.

Hummingbird Nest Ranch is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Southern California. The property has undergone a complete restoration which both captures and preserves the natural beauty of the surroundings.
